ABOUT DARRYL SYMS
A short bio about my career.
Darryl Syms is a Guitarist, Teacher, and Session Musician from Plymouth, UK. His musical career began shortly after over-hearing his former Guitar Teacher for the first time, and becoming immediately inspired. On his 13th Birthday Darryl was given his first Guitar, and did not hesitate to invest his time in regular practice and tuition up until the age of 17.
At just 17 Darryl had experienced his first Session performing Disco tunes on stage as part of a musical with a Pit Band. “It was a great feeling to be able to share my enjoyment through my Guitar to such a joyful audience. I learnt a lot from working alongside the other very talented musicians and dancers too”. Soon after, Darryl had the fortunate opportunity of learning from and performing with world class guitar player Christophe Godin (French guitar player of Mörglbl). “This year was a particularly inspiring year which made me even more passionate about persuing music as a career”. For two years after, Darryl had made appearances in three bands, and was also performing cover songs independently at each opportunity possible.
At 18 Darryl decided it was time to get serious and pursue his passion and make a living as a Guitar Player. “I knew it was a long shot to be able to make it with a band, so I decided to pursue a lifestyle of Teaching and Session Work”. Darryl has since picked up a variety of sessions, and has worked hard to share his knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm with his growing number of students across the globe. At 20 years old Darryl was already a very popular teacher in his hometown Plymouth, and even began teaching in a couple of high-schools. It was during this time that Darryl also became very interested in broadening his ability across different genres of music and has since been very passionate about Fingerstyle, Jazz Theory, as well as his previous abilities in the Pop/Melodic Rock styles.
In the years leading up to his 22nd birthday Darryl had already managed to perform, and even had lessons, with some of the most talented guitar players on the planet such as Christophe Godin (previously mentioned), Guthrie Govan, Tom Quayle, Andy Timmons, Paul Gilbert, Nick Johnston, and Mika Tyyska. These Guitar Players have been very influential on Darryl’s playing, among many others from a variety of different musical styles.
In 2016 Darryl joined forces with the band “Ten Zero One” who are a Melodic Rock band from Tavistock, UK. Together they have performed their debut album across the South West of the UK. Notably their biggest and most memorable show being on Plymouth Hoe opening for the British Fireworks Championships in 2016, where thousands of people were present. They are now currently working on their second album together which is anticipated to be released late 2017/early 2018.
At the beginning of 2017, Darryl released two comprehensive online instructional guitar courses. Plans for the rest of the year include travelling across the globe with his instrument, sharing his knowledge and experience with as many people and opportunities possible, as well as his continual contributions to his growing YouTube channel. Darryl hopes to debut and perform his own instrumental music for the first time on this journey before returning to the UK later in the year.
Darryl’s dedication to playing the Guitar has inspired and led him to become a full-time active Guitar Tutor, YouTube Contributor, Performer, Composer, Producer, and Session Musician.

Teaching has always been the staple in my career and contributes to most of my work. I’ve always had a passion to inspire and share my enthusiasm with others who wish to learn, in whatever area of knowledge. I’ve been teaching Guitar for over 5 years now and have taught a wide range of students wanting to learn Rock, Pop, Blues, Funk, Acoustic, Fingerstyle, Classical, Country, Metal, and more! I’ve had students from the age of just 6, up to 68 – who all enjoy their lessons and are quickly progressing towards their goals and even making new ones. Some students just play for fun, and others are working towards Grades (some of which needed these for University)! I also teach Guitar at Plymstock School.
If you would like to get involved and book a guitar lesson, visit my ‘Guitar Lessons’ webpage for more information.
I’m much the perfectionist when it comes to transcribing and I’ve spent hours building up my ongoing extensive portfolio of work for my students. Most of my transcriptions are hand written on tablature and are very well presented making it easy to read. Over the years I’ve built 4 large binders worth of hand written music ranging from all different genres, which is mostly used for my students. These binders are always growing with new material which interests different students. Not only do I have a lot of experience transcribing Guitar, but I’ve also transcribed Bass & Drums for different reasons.
If you would like me to transcribe some music for you, get in touch with me by filling out the form on my contact page.
I’ve held a number small masterclasses for groups of up to 10 people. In these classes I aim to share new ideas with everyone, and the end result is for everyone to have something to take away and practice. Some people find group sessions more enjoyable, and it sometimes helps them to progress with similar/like-minded people. Masterclasses can sometimes also be a much cheaper option than having one to one private tuition.
If you have a group of people who would be interested in hiring me to organise a masterclass then please contact me for more information and a quote.
Weddings are something that you’d want to be perfect and sometimes unique. Do the usher a favour and let me take control of the music rather than have him work out how to use that CD player from 1995. I have experience preparing tailored elegant acoustic fingerstyle music for Wedding Ceremonies, but can also deliver a full band if you prefer.
Check my YouTube channel for a couple examples of some acoustic fingerstyle playing that I’ve done at weddings in the past. If you would like to get in touch for a quote and to arrange a meeting, please fill out the form on my contact page.
Over the years I’ve been called upon for a number of sessions varying from live shows to jobs in my home studio. I was 17 when I did my very first session where I was featured in the pit band for ‘Grease’, a music production where I was required to sight read and act among many other talented young performers and musicians. This was a blast, and very inspiring for me to become more involved in the session industry. Since then I have completed a variety of sessions from local and far, working with independent artists, bands, and companies such as ‘The Sound House’, ‘Enigma’, ‘Plymkids’, ‘Alex Dumbiotis’, and ‘Cody Rapol’ just to name a few.
If you would like to enquire about hiring me for a session, please get in touch with me on my contact page. Otherwise check out my ‘Session Portfolio’ for more information and media.
With my ongoing contribution to social media platforms such as Facebook, Youtube, and Instagram, I’ve gained a combined following of over 3,000 people. I often talk about some of my favourite things on social media, but if you have something that you would like me to review or demo then swing me a message.
If you would like to find out more, please get in touch with me using the form on my contact page.
